Several Republican media figures have accused President Obama of refusing to deport hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants. They’re calling it “amnesty.”
On his conservative radio show, Rush Limbaugh says the President has “secretly, basically executed amnesty for illegal immigrants … It just happened out there.”
And Mark Steyn, when filling in for Rush, alleged that President Obama issued an imperial decree that he’s henceforth not going to be enforcing American immigration law.”
President Obama’s administration recently announced policy changes that will help make our broken immigration system smarter and fairer—but that’s never meant amnesty. The editorial board of Florida’s Tampa Bay Times said that President Obama’s immigration policy changes are “not amnesty for illegal immigrants as some critics have claimed.” The Washington Post editorial board came to the same conclusion.
Instead, the new policy will help the Department of Homeland Security prioritize the removal of undocumented immigrants who pose a risk to America’s national security. Under the new policy, DHS will review the pending cases of approximately 300,000 immigrants and suspend certain cases for immigrants who pose no threat.
By removing people who have been convicted of crimes or who pose a greater security risk, the administration is implementing our current immigration laws in a way that is more humane to people with “low-priority” cases-like veterans or young people who were brought here as small children and know no home other than the United States.
By refocusing the policy to prioritize people who pose a safety threat, the administration has actually had greater success in removing dangerous criminals from our communities The Obama administration has strengthened our borders while making our immigration system smart and fair. It’s sensible, and it works.
